FACT SHEET: Use the Christmas rush to increase footfall and trade next year.

November 25, 2009 by inapub

Sounds great, so what’s the catch we hear you cry? Well really there isn’t one and it’s entirely up to you how much time and energy you give to it, however, as with most things; the more you put in the more you’ll get out.

Quite simply you need to “cash in” on your extra “Christmas” customers by getting their email addresses.

You can then invite them to join your own dedicated, secure and private Inapub community safe in the knowledge that next year they’ll be automatically reminded of any event, promotion or special offer that you run.

But why? Well it’s been proven in one industry leading report that engaging with your customers through social media increases your revenue on average 18% per annum.

And recent articles in the trade press have added to this compelling argument – Ben Langdon chief executive of the Digital Marketing Group, speaking at the M&C Report’s Digital Future conference told leading sector executives “if used correctly digital platforms could tap into a huge wealth of resources” adding that “Online Socialites (or 78% of UK internet users) have a disposal income of 20%”.

Below are our 4 steps to maximise your revenues next year using the busy period you’re about to enter this year.

STEP 1: Gather Email Addresses

Up to you how much you want to invest on this – we’ve priced some options below all of which we’ve tried.

Less than £10

Either on a computer, or by hand, create a form for people to write their name and email address on.

Place a pot on the bar with a hand-made sign saying “drop in your business card to receive news, offers and promotions”.

If you serve food ask people to write their email address down at the end of the meal.

Less than £30

Buy a bundle of Inapub sign up cards for £10.

Place a pot on the bar with sign up cards next to it saying “win a bottle of wine” – encourage all your customers to take part either by dropping in a business card or by completing the Inapub sign up cards.

Make the competition prize only available to those who register in your community.

Less than £50

As above, only improve the competition prize; perhaps a bottle of Champagne, a meal for 2, a crate of beer – depending on what you think your customers will like.

Up to & over a £100

The most successful way to accumulate email addresses is to make run a “Christmas Nearest the Answer” evening.

Whenever you feel the pub is busy enough create on the hour questions where the person with the nearest answer wins the prize – prize size and type is up to you.

All entries need to fill in a simple ticket which has name, email and answer and return them during the hour to your pot – 3 hourly questions starting at 8pm will hit your entire evenings customer base and will likely result in you gaining a significant volume of email addresses.

Use this PDF for a printable sheet of entry tickets.

STEP 2: How to invite your customers to join your online community

Regardless of the option you go for in step 1, you now have to invite your customers to join your online community.

To do this go to www.inapub.co.uk

Login (top right of the homepage) using your details.

On the logged in homepage click “View Details” of your pub/bar listed under the “My Venues” section.

Click “Invitees” – you’ll find the link directly under the “Your Venue Community” heading.

Click the link to the right of the Invitees area saying “Invite More”

Add the email addresses into the box marked “Invite more friends” separated by commas or semi colons: me@me.co.uk; you@you.com;

STEP 3: Write your invite email

The email will be sent by Inapub and will include the necessary links for your customers to register in your community. It will also say it has been sent by you.

But there is an area within this email for you to provide a further reason for the “invitee” to join your community.

We suggest something along these lines:

“Thank you for giving us your email address during [enter the promotion you ran] we’re now inviting you to join our private and secure online community on Inapub.

By joining our community you’ll be first to hear about and receive our event, special offer and promotions news. You can also share your stories and photos with other members in the community area.

[Add if applicable – As a community member you'll also receive exclusive special offers.]”

STEP 4: Monitor uptake and re-invite

By following step 2; you’ll be able to monitor which invitees become full members and which remain as invitees.

From time to time it is advisable to re-invite your invitees to join your community [every 2 weeks is about right] you can see when you last invited people and select all or individually who you’d like to re-invite.

NB: all invitees and full community members receive notification of events that you add to your community.

A pub to be proud of!

August 9, 2009 by inapub

We’ve recently been successfully promoting Inapub.co.uk in Brighton and last week we came across an unassuming pub called “The Robin Hood” a pub we think is definitely one pub to be proud of, as all their profits go to local charities!

From the outside The Robin Hood looks like any other local community pub tucked down one of Brighton & Hove’s backstreets. When you walk in you get a warm welcome and are immediately tempted to order one of the fabulous stone fired pizzas! But once you find out that they give their profits to charity it makes you feel even warmer inside and want to drink their all the time!

Granted not every pub or business can do this, but it’s fantastic that the owner; who bought The Robin Hood nearly five years ago with profits from another pub sale; saw that running a business which gave its profits away was a better long term investment in local charities than giving a slug of his original “sale” profits to charity.

We’d have to agree!

So we gave The Robin Hood a completely free subscription to Inapub.co.uk, a free Twitter feed and set their account up! We also want to make sure that loads of people go to their 5th year birthday party on the 22nd August and that anyone who enjoys real ale checks out their Real Ale festival which will run from the 13th Aug finishing on the weekend of their party.

Oh – and just in case you’re wondering… the pubs name The Robin Hood, has been the same for years – but what a lovely irony there is with its new role in the community (not to mention my name)!

Cheers

Robin “Proud supporter of The Robin Hood”

Ps: If you do go in having found out or read about them via Inapub.co.uk, then please mention it, we want them to know how big a fan of them we are!

We’ve been REALLY busy!

July 24, 2009 by inapub

Hi everyone.

Founder Robin here!

Well I’ll start by saying we’ve been really REALLY busy; so busy in fact none of us has had the time to sit down and write a little blog, so it’s long overdue!

Since we last wrote we’ve:

New Look & Feel

After testing our old site out we realised that we could make some simple improvements to the look and feel of the site which would realise massive improvements for all of you, our users!

We spoke with Chris, our creative man, and he helped us put together a damn fine new look, which we implemented and tested over 4 weeks and then rolled out in mid July – thanks Chris for all your help!!

We’re sure you’ll agree the transformation is excellent and it’s incredible to look at where we’ve come from:

2 years ago as Official Beer Club:

Early 2009 as we launched Inapub.co.uk

And now as Inapub V2

Facebook Connect

This is an awesome bit of functionality.

The best thing about Facebook Connect is you can publish your events straight to your facebook wall, or share events and pubs/bars you find on Inapub with your friends via your Facebook wall.

For venues who sign up this means they use Inapub to create events and then share those events with any existing Facebook community or their Twitter followers, not to mention their Inapub community, Google & other search engines and our data supply partners – a great deal of bang for your buck!!

However, importantly Inapub now runs as an app within Facebook which means you can use Inapub while on Facebook – it’s a beta release there at the moment so there is much we plan to do over the coming months, but for now it’s functional. To view it in Facebook search for “Inapub” in the applications area or click this link: http://apps.facebook.com/in_a_pub/?_fb_q=1 – and make sure you become a fan or friend of it please J

Twitter enhancements for pubs

You’ll remember we launched Twitter back in May 09, and now we have loads of pubs with Twitter feeds but since launching we’ve actually enhanced them. No longer do they just tweet events, now they tweet events, drinks added & daily specials added – meaning as a pub your twitter followers are kept fully up to date with all your news.

We’ll keep adding to this over the coming months and let you know.

New menus for pubs & bars!

Up until recently pubs and bars could only add dishes to the standard courses of starters, mains, desserts and roasts, but now we’ve made the menu totally flexible!

You create the courses you want, you can put them in the order you want and then you can create the dishes you want under each course!

Total control! You’ll still enjoy the same benefit of having a full online and printable menu for all your customers to view, and we’ve kept “Specials” as the area where you can promote the dishes you serve that will change regularly.

We’re always interested in feedback so let us know if there’s something you’d like to see – our food search will come online soon!

Brighton Promotion

We’ve started working with the pubs and bars of Brighton – we’ve had an awesome response! So far 30 pubs/bars have signed up and more will be following shortly!

Here are some great examples:

Ambassadors Programme

Our ambassadors programme launched this week. We’re looking for bright young things to work with us across the UK – for more details go here: http://www.inapub.co.uk/studentambassadors.aspx

Mobile Site

Our mobile site is almost ready to launch, we’re currently in final testing of the look and feel, and once our testers give us the green light we’ll be launching it with no great fanfare J. We will blog about it though as we think being able to see events and pubs on your mobile while out & about will be super cool – we’re developing a version for the iPhone too! Even cooller!

Speaking, and listening, to people in the industry

Not much to say here, except, we’re always wanting to talk and find out what people think we’re doing right, and also what people think we could do better! We’ve been very busy talking and even busier listening to lots of people in the industry in the last 6 weeks! We always happy to speak to you so drop us a line – anytime at site@inapub.co.uk

Help section launched

Finally we realised our website has become rather big – in fact there is so much you can do on it that it’s become a behemoth of a site! So we felt it was high time to develop a good quality help section to guide you through the core stuff.

It doesn’t yet cover everything but certainly it’s got enough to get you started. Have a browse and if we don’t answer your question then LET US KNOW, we always want to help so TELL US ASAP and we’ll get back to you!

It’s easy to find – just look for the Help link on the main navigation!

Thanks for reading our blog, we’ll try hard to write soon so watch this space!

All the best

Robin.

Grain Brewery Beer Festival

June 16, 2009 by inapub

On Saturday 13th June we were on South Farm in sunny Norfolk helping Grain Brewery with their Beer Festival.

The day was a great success and much fun was had by all, not least the Morris Dancers who kept everyone amused with their dancing

and strange looking instruments!

Inapub supported the day in a couple of ways.

Firstly anyone who registered with the promo code “Grain” or set their event attendance on this page: http://www.inapub.co.uk/communities/events/past/all/2775.aspx (don’t forget to upload your photos of the event!) was entitled to get 2 £1 a pint vouchers – Bargain! As you’d expect several people cashed in on that idea!

Secondly, we ran another nearest the answer competition – similar to the one we ran at The Rose Tavern in our Bank Holiday Bonanza event in May.

Only this time we asked 1 simple question :o )

“How many pints are in our (Grain Brewery’s) Fermenter FV3 today”

Of course you’ll agree that isn’t hard to work out – yeah right!!

The answer was a straightforward two thousand one hundred and fifty seven, or 2157 for short.

Those at the day will know we offered 3 prizes, for the 3 nearest answers, all collecting varying amounts of fabulous, award winning Grain Brewed beer.

So, drum roll please…..

In reverse order….

In third place and the winner of 3 bottles of Grain Beer, with the answer of 1800, in the blue corner, ittttttt’s Keith Williams.

In second place and the winner of 1 case of Grain Beer, with the answer of 1884, in the red corner, ittttttt’s Judith Rogers.

And in first place, winning 2 cases or marvellous Grain brewed beer, with the incredibly close answer of 2192, in the purple corner, ittttttt’s Diane Bragg.

CONGRATULATIONS DIANE – good guess!

Thank you to everyone who took part, to everyone who came along and made the day a great success and of course to Grain Brewery for putting on such a fantastic shindig. We’ve heard rumours that they may be planning another one, so whatever you do, make sure you register in their Friends of Grain community on Inapub.co.uk (it’ll take 1 minute of your time) to ensure you find out when that event will be and make sure you’re in line for any special offers or promotions they run in the future.

Cheers.

The Inapub team.

First Pub Twitter Feed

May 19, 2009 by inapub

Not live more than a few days and already a pub has signed up to make the most of our Twitter feed functionality.

The Rose Tavern in Norwich signed up straight away safe in the knowledge that now anyone can track their events on a daily basis on Twitter.

It’s yet another channel to advertising your pub events through the Inapub service.

Want your own pub event feed just like The Rose Tavern’s? All you need is the appropriate subscription to the Inapub service and we’ll do the rest for you. Call us on 0845 230 1986 or mail venues@inapub.co.uk.

Heatmaps & Gazeplots – we’ve been testing

May 14, 2009 by inapub

On Monday in sunny Reading we started our first wave of usability testing with market leading Bunnyfoot/Bunnyfield, the usability testing outfit who have offices around the UK (and the rest of the world!).

We were full of trepidation… what would the “users” say, how would the site stand up to robust and rigorous testing?

What we did know before it all kicked off was:

  • 10 people were lined up to hammer the site for an hour each;
  • That there were 5 men, 5 women – aged between 23 and 68;
  • They all used Facebook and other social networking websites but had not used ours before;
  • Their eyes would be tracked;
  • What they said would be recorded;
  • They would be videoed;
  • We would get heatmaps showing where they looked;
  • We would get gazeplots showing where they’d looked;
  • We’d get an awful lot of information about how our target market interacts with our site!

So, what did we learn? Most importantly we learnt that the http://www.inapub.co.uk/ site is easy to use and more significantly would be used by our testers again. Of course we also found out about the one or 2 (ahem) issues that can be easily resolved or features that would help make it a better experience.

The testers became familiar with the website content and what they should expect very quickly indeed. The below gazeplot shows how one of our “testers” roamed our homepage in the first 2 seconds:

(NB the plot points show where the eye fixated and the size shows the duration – any duration above around 0.5 of a second is considered to trigger a cognitive response.)

We were told by the Bunnyfoot usability consultant that the above gazeplot demonstartes a good homepage because it draws the user across the key content quickly. Generally our testers started looking at the links to the pub events, then tracked up the page to read about the site.

To demonstrate this further, the below heatmap shows what our “testers” looked at on the homepage in the 1st 10 seconds. Again this shows that the page is laid out clearly – attention has been paid to all the key actions. They read about the website, they notice the sign-up button and the login control; finally significant focus is paid to the events themselves – whether that be searching or looking at the currency of the events i.e. see today’s events.

The testers were given a few minutes to navigate around the website and were told to imagine they lived in Norwich – for the purposes of this test we used a “test site” with lots events and venues for Noriwch.

As expected all users searched for events in Norwich and were generally happy with the presentation of the results, some users browsed for events in Norwich and below we can see what grabbed their attention in the first 10 seconds of looking:

Twitter feeds for pubs!

May 14, 2009 by inapub

We’re excited about this one – seriously excited! Our Twitter feed for pubs is now live AND it’s not just for pubs – any public events created on our site in one of our city feeds will be fed to Twitter to!

So what does this mean exactly? It means that any public event on our site can now be automatically fed to Twitter and be followed for free by any of the 2m or so UK adults that use Twitter.

An example event Tweet is shown here – the link will take you directly to the event detail page on our site:

“DJ’s playing till late, 15th May 2009 20:30 at The Edith Cavell http://tinyurl.com/owd3lj

If you’re a pub and want us to manage your events and feed them to Twitter on your behalf every day, call us on 0845 230 1986.

Even if you don’t want your own feed we’ll be creating ones for towns & cities in the UK as appropriate – the first one is for our pilot city Norwich and by following this feed you’ll be kept up to date with Norwich events on Twitter.

We’ve got stack loads of other ideas about what to do with Twitter so watch this space for further updates.

Interesting Questionnaire Results

April 1, 2009 by inapub

We ran a questionnaire the other day to find out about people’s views on going out. Things like, do you find it easy to plan? do you need reminding? through to, do you want to know who is showing the football?! We had an excellent and speedy response! The average age was 33 – the youngest being 18 the oldest being 53 – we had a 80-20% split male female.

43% of folk go out every week with friends, whereas an amazing 10% go out daily (spot the 20 somethings…), around 41% go out with friends 1 or 2 times a month.

Unsurprisingly the mobile phone plays a huge part in the organisation of events around 60% of the communication that occurs in organising goes through the mobile via text or calls:

As we can see Outlook plays a key role in the creation of the event via email/calendar features.

77% of people use Google to help either plan where they are going to go or find out what’s going on around them, demonstrating Google as a big vehicle for user traffic to any event/venue site!

But the key metrics for us hinged around the following questions. The results are fantastic! Perhaps this will encourage more pubs to sign up and get their events on our site via our silver (we do it for you!) subscription:

Interestingly stereotypes stack up here – in that 62% of men would like to know who is showing the football as opposed to just 24% of women – with some women saying they want to know so they know NOT to go to that pub :o ! Age also plays a significant role here, with 58% of under 30 and 60% of 30 year olds saying they want to know who’s showing the football, as opposed to just 25% of over 30 year olds.

So there you have it! 67% of people say yes to being kept up to date with their local pubs events, special offers and promotions, and if you add the 20% who say maybe you have a whopping 87% positive response!!! This figure hardly changes between the sexes or the age groups; although females are (slightly) more likely to say yes and the likelihood of saying yes (slightly) decreases with age.

Obviously we didn’t test for every event a pub can put on – for example a chess event would be less popular than pool would be; and live music would obviously be more popular than probably anything else!

Pubs – don’t hang about, get yourself listed and on our site, after all, 71% of folk want to know if you’re showing the game tonight!!
